When an 8-year-old girl goes missing in Caddo Lake, several past deaths and disappearances begin to connect, changing the history of a broken family. There’s a scene where Anna’s mom says Marshall County later says Harrison County. Marshall is the county seat of Harrison County, Texas. However, the way they pull it off is pretty impressive
Once you figure out what’s going on, the story itself isn’t really groundbreaking after the fact. I don’t think people give enough consideration to the degree of coordination required to use rhythm and tone in any film, especially when using special effects and lighting, which may depend on the time of day. This film does all of this quite flawlessly and creates an almost palpable momentum that carries you through. While I wasn’t surprised it ended when it did, not once did I look for it or think about it until it was over.
Dylan O’Brien is something brilliant
This is usually a clear sign of storytelling competence. However, the final scene felt a bit empty for reasons I can’t quite explain. Perhaps a clearer angle from Celeste’s final, knowing gaze would have resolved this, but that’s just a delusion, not a real criticism. The acting was good for everyone involved.
A great watch
I’ve seen his work before, but this one really let him shine. Lauren Ambrose also totally sells the manic/disturbed persona and just became that persona. Eliza Scanlen never once failed to sell me on what was happening on screen. Talents like this make it much easier to lose yourself in whatever is on display, and that’s always appreciated.
