I had the honor of seeing this excellent film at the AFI Film Festival
Line of Events
During the 1972 Olympics in Munich, an American sports broadcasting group is involved in covering a hostage situation involving Israeli athletes.
The film is set in the ABC equipment room in Munich during the 1972 Olympics
It realistically depicts both the routine aspects of equipment operation during the event and, of course, the tragic events of the Black September attacks on the Israeli athletes.
The film also accurately shows how technology that was then considered cutting-edge now seems hilariously primitive (examples include giant VCRs competing for satellite space, manually inserting graphics, etc)
The office consists of ABC Sports President Rune Arledge (Peter Sarsgaard), rookie producer Jeffrey Mason (John Magaro), VP of Olympic coverage Marvin Bader (Ben Chaplin), and German translator Marianne Gebhardt (Leoni Benes), all of whom do excellent work with their roles.
Realism is added by the use of Jim McKay’s archival footage covering the tragedy
But the key aspect of any thriller is Tim Felbaum’s script and direction, which keep you on the edge of your seat throughout.
But of course, this nitpick doesn’t stop me from highly recommending this excellent film, a must-see!
My only minor gripe is with the casting of Benjamin Walker as Peter Jennings – he doesn’t quite seem right for the handsome and dapper host I remember (I’d probably cut his character and rely solely on the recording of Jennings’ conversation at the Olympic Village).
