What’s the consensus?
The main title was written and performed by (uncredited) Ramin Djawadi. Let’s say you’re reading these reviews and haven’t watched GoT yet, but now that it’s over, you’re considering a marathon. In this case, the consensus is correct and it is: Seasons 1-6: Outstanding. Deep worldbuilding, smart dialogue, epic set pieces worthy of Hollywood, expert acting, detailed plot, genuine surprises, and a great soundtrack used sparingly.
GoT is definitely worth watching in these times
Season 7: You suddenly find that the writing and plot have dropped drastically in quality. There are inexplicable ideas, inconsistent characterizations, and soap operas. But at least the entertainment value is still very high, so it passes. Season 8: This fall, it sinks to depths you never thought possible.
It’s fatal to fiction
The writing has become so amateurish that the fantastic production values still aren’t enough to save it. If you’ve ever enjoyed Lost but were surprised by how bad last season was, you’re on familiar territory here. The biggest problem with last season was that it took us away from the story and made us think about its many weaknesses. We’ve lost our suspension of disbelief.
But it’s not always the best series
It ruined the arc of the series to the point where it’s pointless to rewatch the entire series. So can I recommend a GoT marathon for newcomers? Yes, the first 6 seasons are worth the disappointment. While that might have been the case, dropping the ball in the finale leaves behind the following great series that are more worthy of your marathon: Battlestar Galactica (2003-2008) Twin Peaks (all 3 seasons and the movie) Breaking Bad
