Reed, a reclusive Englishman
Founded in 2012, production and distribution company A24 has become synonymous with quality. Usually, if a movie or TV series sports the A24 logo, it’s worth watching and was probably created by the auteur. The likes of Jonathan Glazer, Denis Villeneuve, and Sofia Coppola have collaborated with the company to great effect. A24 is also now associated with – what some call – “augmented horror”; which, despite the pretentious name, basically means a horror movie that’s actually good. From Robert Eggers' From ‘The Witch’ and ‘The Lighthouse’ to Ari Aster’s ‘Midsommar’ and Alex Garland’s ‘The Men’, A24 consistently delivers original horror films that don’t just scare you, but also explore deeper themes, creating a sense of dread that lingers long after the credits roll. Their latest horror offering, ‘Heretic’; follows two Mormon missionaries, Sisters Barnes and Paxton, who find themselves in mortal danger after visiting the home of Mr.
In many ways, it does
Does it live up to A24’s standards? Written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, ‘Heretic’; is a tense exploration of faith, fear, and the unknown. An unsettling, ominous atmosphere is fostered throughout the first two acts, and it’s unclear where the proceedings are headed. It also has a bit of dark humor, mostly in the behavior and dialogue of Reed’s character; whose good nature and charm belie the underlying darkness. Additionally, Reed’s monologues about religion bring up some really interesting points, exploring the conflicts between faith and doubt, and the struggle to reconcile faith with the harsh realities of the world. His comparisons between religion, board games, and popular music are particularly provocative, forcing the main characters—and the audience—to reflect on their beliefs and the societal structures that surround them.
Visually, “Heretic” is stunning
The narrative is engaging throughout, though it loses steam in the third act. It all boils down to a predictable riff on classic horror tropes. While the initial build-up is masterful, the resolution feels a bit rushed and less impactful than the film’s earlier complexities. However, this slight momentum doesn’t overshadow the film’s overall success. Chung-hoon Chung’s haunting cinematography captures the eerie isolation of Reed’s home beautifully, creating a beautiful and terrifying atmosphere. Chung’s use of extreme close-ups, as well as the use of light and shadow, heightens the film’s ominous atmosphere.
At first, Reed’s home seems grand and unremarkable, much like the man himself
Philip Messina’s intricate production design is also restrained; the contrasting interiors of Reed’s home are both artistically impressive and speak to Reed’s development as a character. As the story progresses and the sisters move further into his home, it undergoes a metamorphosis, becoming grander and more imposing, before sinking into a mundane gloom. This transformation not only heightens the tension, but also symbolizes the revelation of Reed’s true nature; a clever piece of visual storytelling.
