It’s pure madness
Line of Events
In Mexico, a lawyer receives an unexpected offer to help a feared cartel boss retire and disappear forever, becoming the woman he always wanted to be. IMDb editor Arno Kazarian offers brief reviews of 12 films he screened at the 2024 New York Film Festival, including Anora and the dangerous, strangely erotic Misericordia. Jacques Audiard said he was inspired to come up with the musical chapter in his novel about a drug dealer who seeks to change his identity. The French title card misspells the name of an Indian city as “Dehli.” Featured in Latino Slant: La Bamba Remake, Tarantino Has a BIG MOUTH, Jenny and Selena’s SPICE Shocks! (2024). El AlegatoWritten by Camille, Clément Ducol, and Jacques AudiardPerformed by Zoe Saldana. My second favorite Cannes film after "The Substance" (I haven’t seen “Anora”).
“Emilia Perez” is really creative
A musical about drug traffickers and corruption in Mexico??? WTF??? It combines many different genres: drama, comedy, musical, thriller, but it does it in a very good and funny way. It is also incredibly original and surprisingly emotional. There is a character who goes on a touching and heartbreaking journey throughout the film. I won’t go into details. This is not really a spoiler because it is revealed in the first 15-20 minutes of the film, but I didn’t know about it and was shocked that this film went in this direction.
Gascon plays the title character
So I advise you not to read the description and go to the cinema blindly if you want the best experience. The best thing about “Emilia Perez” is definitely the acting. The film won the Best Actress award in Cannes for 4 performances (Karla Sofia Gascon, Zoe Saldana, Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz). Saldana plays the lead role and has many intense and spectacular scenes (especially musical ones). I am glad that after all these hits she finally got a role where she could show her acting skills. It is a bit of a supporting role, but honestly she is the heart of the movie and the whole story revolves around her. Gomez and Paz were good, but I am surprised that they also won the Palme d’Or – their performances were not as great and memorable as Saldana and Gascon’s.
“Emilia Perez” isn’t for everyone
Jacques Audiard’s vision is bold and impressive. This movie is stylish and looks beautiful. I love the cinematography and the music. Not everything works perfectly and there were a few moments where I was not completely convinced, but for the most part I enjoyed it and was amazed by its madness, inventiveness and originality. I am not a big fan of musicals, but the musical scenes (of which there are not many) in this movie are engaging and very well choreographed and filmed, which makes them a pleasure to watch. The songs are catchy and memorable (my favorites are the one about vaginoplasty and the taste of cola). Some people walked out, some people said it was one of the worst films of the festival, some people loved it (myself included).
But I still recommend watching it
The general public won’t love it. The closest film I’ve seen to it is “Annette” by Leos Carax. “Emilia Perez” is more of a crowd pleaser, but it’s still going to be missed by a lot of people. Let’s support weird and niche cinema. No need to waste time on endless scrolling—here’s the entire list of new films and TV shows coming to Netflix this month.
